Contributing to Notre Dame of Marbel University’s growth in critical scholarship, Mr. Kloyde Caday was among the featured researcher-speakers at a research symposium on English language education held on January 8–9, 2026, at Sorsogon State University (SorSU).

Mr. Caday is the Publication Officer at NDMU’s Research and Publication Office and a faculty member of the Language Department whose research interests include applied linguistics, literature teaching, and Mindanao studies. He is also an essayist and an advocate.

The symposium, titled “Thinking and Doing Otherwise: English Language Education in the Philippines,” gathered educators, researchers, and graduate students to reflect on contemporary challenges and possibilities in English language teaching.

Central to the discussions was The Routledge Handbook of English Language Education in the Philippines, a recently launched resource to which every presenter contributed a chapter. The book was published by Routledge, the world’s leading academic publisher in Humanities and Social Sciences.

During the event, Mr. Caday presented a research talk titled Critical Consciousness in English Subjects and the Imperative for Transformative Intellectuals in Mindanao Schools. His presentation was delivered as part of the panel “Language Ideologies, Identity, and Critical Perspectives in English Language Education.”

Beyond individual presentations, the symposium comprised the official launch of the book with editors Dr. Isabel Pefianco Martin of Ateneo de Manila University and Dr. Julius Martinez of Niigata University of International and Informational Studies (Japan); engaging panel discussions on language ideologies, multimodal literacies, and inclusive language practices; keynote addresses from Dr. Martinez and Dr. Susan Astillero of SorSU; and interactive activities such as a book raffle.

Organized by the Ateneo Center for English Language Teaching and the Sorsogon State University Graduate School, the symposium served as a platform for amplifying critical voices in English language education.

The beginning of this year signals more opportunities for scholars from the university to share their work on national and international platforms and demonstrate the caliber of NDMU.
