Notre Dame of Marbel University (NDMU), through its Gender and Human Development (GaHD) Office, successfully conducted the Gender Leadership Seminar-Workshop – Phase 1 on October 10–11, 2026, at the NDMU Tupi Farm and Retreat Center. Guided by the theme “Nurturing Marist Student Gender Advocates as Servant Leaders Through an Inclusive Lens,” the two-day gathering brought together student gender advocates from Sofia Arise, CHADA, and KaBay for reflection, learning, and solidarity.

In her opening message, GaHD Coordinator Sr. Mary Ann B. Rhudy, OND, emphasized that the workshop was an invitation for student advocates to reflect on the true meaning of leadership. She highlighted the importance of grounding leadership in the Marist core values of Presence, Simplicity, Family Spirit, Love of Work, and In the Way of Mary. She also underscored servant leadership as an approach rooted in humility and service rather than dominance. Integrating gender and inclusion into student leadership, she explained, reflects the University's mission and echoes Mary's selfless Fiat—a commitment to serve others without distinction or condition.

Resource speaker Br. Mark Roberth R. Laurea, FMS, President of Marist School Marikina, facilitated discussions on empathy, active listening, and effective communication. Emphasizing that “We are wired for belonging,” he highlighted the role of listening in understanding diverse perspectives and creating spaces where everyone feels valued and included. Through the metaphor of cultivating the soil rather than forcing the seed, he encouraged the participants to nurture supportive environments that allow individuals to grow at their own pace.

A key highlight of the seminar was the call to look beyond personal recognition and focus on the needs of others. Br. Mark reminded the student leaders that “Leadership is not about being seen, but about who you see,” encouraging them to recognize and support those who may otherwise be overlooked.

The workshop provided a meaningful opportunity for the student advocates to strengthen their bonds, deepen their understanding of inclusive leadership, and develop practical insights for championing gender-responsive initiatives within their respective organizations and across the NDMU community.

With a renewed sense of purpose, the participants concluded the two-day gathering inspired to lead with confidence, compassion, and a commitment to inclusion. As Marist student gender advocates, they carry forward the call to listen with purpose, nurture the growth of others, and serve their communities with humility—living out the mission: For GaHD and for all.
