The Samahang Pisika ng Visayas at Mindanao (SPVM) held concurrently a national conference and two international conferences in Silliman University, Dumaguete City last October 20-22, 2016, namely the 18th National Physics Conference,
the 2016 International Conference on Materials Science and Nanotechnology, and the 4th International Meeting for Complex Systems.
The conferences aimed to bring together foreign and Filipino experts in the various theoretical and experimental fields of physics, including those who are in physics education, and present relevant research findings in these fields. This year, a contest on Science Investigatory Projects (SIP) among high school students was included to promote the conduct of research early on in their academic life.
Two research papers from NDMU were accepted for presentation. One was an oral presentation in the 4th International Meeting on Complex Systems by Mr. Gino E. Aliperio, MS, a physics teacher in the College of Arts and Sciences. Mr. Aliperio’s paper was entitled “One-dimensional collective motion of chemically driven selfpropelling boats in channel.” The
other paper entitled “Development of polytetrafluoroethylene superhydrophobic surface with patterned micro-roughness
morphology” was a poster presentation in the 18th SPVM National Physics Conference by Justine C. Mercado, Charilou G.
Corpuz, and Keziah Kaye M. Nalaunan, who are all students from the College of Education. Their research was conducted under the mentorship of Mr. Aliperio.
